SIGNING MEMORANDUM OF COOPERATION BETWEEN THE TAJIK GOVERNMENT AND IOM TO COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING

On 23 August 2008, the Mission of the International Organization for Migration in Tajikistan and Interministerial Commission for combating human trafficking at the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan signed joint action plan in the sphere of combating human trafficking in Tajikistan for 2008-2009. Official ceremony of signing joint action plan was in IOM office.

OFFICIAL PRESENTATION OF NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER FOR COMBATING HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Opening National Training Center for combating human trafficking at the Law Faculty of Tajik State National University is the next most important event realized within the frames of country’s Government policy, directed to effective implementation of UN Convention again transnational crime and additional protocols to it, ratified by Tajikistan in 2002. This even was the outcome of close cooperation and active consultations of Interministerial Commission for combating human trafficking at the Tajikistan Government and Mission of the International Organization for Migration in Tajikistan, regarding realization of practical action in the sphere of combating human trafficking.

INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTER FOR LABOUR MIGRANTS OPENED IN HISSAR

Owing to generous funding from the Government of Norway within the frames of the project “Stemming illegal migration flows from Tajikistan and enhancing the country's migration management system” Infromation Resource Center for labour migrants was opened in Hissar. Supported by the International Organization for Migration and in cooperation with the Association of developing Tajikistan small towns “Vatanam”, the opening ceremony was held on July 4, 2007. This new Information Resource Center in Hissar is located in the building of State Statistical Department, 11 Abdulloev Street.

EXPERT SEMINAR AND ROUNDTABLE FOR ACADEMICS AND NGOs

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Executive Apparatus of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan are arranging a seminar-training session to discuss the issue of “Labor migration: Informational and Analytical Support of Migration Processes in the Republic of Tajikistan” and a round table “Scientific expert-analytical and informational support of migration processes” for NGOs and academics. There will be an opportunity for a limited number of representatives from the mass media to attend these two events.

IOM PHOTO COMPETITION

Dushanbe, 14 May 2007. IOM Tajikistan is organizing a photo competition. The task is to picture any aspect of Tajik labour migration in any of the CIS countries. IOM Tajikistan should have received all photos by 15 August 2007. During the fall and winter 2007 – 2008 a photo exhibition will be organized in different Tajik cities, showing a selection of submitted photos. First price is 650 Euros.

PRESS BRIEFING ON "NEW MIGRATION RULES FOR FOREIGN CITIZENS IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION"

Dushanbe, 10 January 2007. New laws regulating the legal status of foreign citizens in Russia will come into force 15th of January 2007. They are the Russian Federal Law № 110-FL of 18th of July 2006, «About the legal position of foreign citizens in the Russian Federation», and the Russian Federal Law N 109-FL of 18th July 2006, «About the migration registration of foreign citizens and persons without citizenship in the Russian Federation». In this connection IOM Tajikistan, with the participation of experts of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Representation of the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation in Tajikistan, conduct a Press briefing 10 January 2007 with the aim of informing the representatives of the mass media about the new laws and amendments. Information material for publication will be distributed at the press briefing.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO INTERNATIONAL MIGRANTS DAY

Dushanbe, 15 December 2006. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Tajikistan, with the financial support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, conducts a National Conference named “Labour migration. HIV/AIDS and Human Rights” dedicated to the International Migrants Day.

INAUGURATION OF THE TRAINING CENTRE FOR BORDER GUARDS IN KHOROG

Dushanbe, 4 October 2006. Within its Border Managment Programme in Tajikistan, IOM has completed a new project titled "Training Centre for Border Guards in Khorog". This centre will function as the extension of the already existing Border Guard Training Centre in Dushanbe which was established by IOM in 2003.

STATE OF THE ART BORDER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM EXTENDED TO NEW AREA

Geneva, 28 April 2006. The IOM mission in Dushanbe has extended its border management programme to the Bratstvo border crossing point, which lies to the west of the capital Dushanbe on the border with Uzbekistan. A border point established after Tajikistan's independence in 1991, Bratstvo handles large amounts of truck, car and pedestrian traffic every day and did not match international standards of border control until now. Under the programme funded by the US State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), new premises have been built, technical assistance and training provided to allow border guards to use computers and state of the art border control equipment provided to detect fraudulent travel documents.

OFFICIAL CEREMONY OF SIGNING THE BILATERAL MEMORANDUM OF COOPERATION BETWEEN THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MIGRATION AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN

Dushanbe, 15 February 2006. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Tajikistan and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan have signed a Memorandum of cooperation in the sphere of combating human trafficking. The signing of the Memorandum of cooperation is a positive example of the joint efforts in the formation of cooperation and interaction mechanisms between the IOM and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, and it will allow an increased specter of joint actions to combat the negative phenomenon of human trafficking in our society.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE "ECONOMIC DYNAMICS OF LABOUR MIGRANT REMITTANCES IN TAJIKISTAN"

Dushanbe, 2 February 2006. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Tajikistan arranged on the 25-26 January a conference on "Economic Dynamics of Labour Migrant Remittances in Tajikistan". The conference produced a compilation of information and best practices on different aspects of remittances. It brought together 80 national and international stakeholders as well as experts in several aspects of remittances with the goals of promoting dialogue, exchanging perspectives, and sharing key learning experiences. The results of an IOM/UNDP pilot project “Enhancing the development impact of labour migrant remittances” was presented and was highly assessed by the participants. Government representatives highlighted the support of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan for replicating the IOM pilot project model in other parts of Tajikistan to enhance the impact of labour migrant remittances.
